[RE]CAPTURE

Based on the concept of filtration, [re]capture is an installation that explores the materialization of atmospheric pollution flows in Montreal. Nomadic objects placed in urban space capture the levels of fine particles, carbon dioxide and organic volatile compounds as well as images of their immediate environment. This data is organized and retransmitted into the exhibition space to inform the behavior of wind and light flows which circulate in a filtration system made of biomaterials and plants recognized for their filtering properties.
Alice Jarry est une artiste, chercheuse et éducatrice qui se spécialise dans les œuvres in situ, la conception socio-environnementale, les arts numériques, les médias tangibles et les projets communautaires. Ses recherches portent sur la durabilité, l'esthétique et la politique, et s'intéressent de manière critique à la matérialité, à la production matérielle et aux questions contemporaines concernant les communautés urbaines et les infrastructures. La matière étant indissociable de la forme et de la pratique, ses installations examinent comment la matérialité, engagée dans des processus constants de transformation et de circulation avec le lieu, la technologie et les communautés, peut provoquer l'émergence de formes adaptatives et de relations socio-environnementales résilientes.
[re]capture is part of the research-creation project “Dynamic flexible membranes: air filtration as an active material, interdisciplinary and environmental process” directed by Alice Jarry (Concordia University) and supported by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et Culture and the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
The team would like to thank the City of Montreal Environment Department (Air Quality Division), Patrizio McLelland, Sarah Al Mamoun and Teague Riordon.
Under the direction of Alice Jarry, the artwork was created collectively by members of the Research Chair in Critical Practices in Materials and Materiality (Concordia) and the Biolab at the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture, and Technology.
